Traditional theatre spaces often require significant time commitments, making it difficult for many artists and arts enthusiasts to participate fully. Community Playlist was created as a fresh, flexible alternative; a space where creativity can thrive without the constraints of traditional rehearsal schedules and production demands. This blog explores what Community Playlist is, how the idea first came to life, the excitement surrounding its debut performance, and the vital role the community has played in its continued growth and success.

What is the Community Playlist Project?

Community Playlist is a musical project designed to offer a creative outlet for people who love performing but cannot commit to the demanding timelines of conventional theatre productions. It provides a platform for artists, musicians, and storytellers to collaborate and share their work in a relaxed, supportive environment. Think, a semi-rehearsed open mic.

Unlike traditional theatre, which often requires months of rehearsals and strict schedules, Community Playlist embraces flexibility. For each production, selected performers choose songs inspired by a theme connected to the evening’s nonprofit beneficiary. This approach encourages participation from a diverse group of creatives who might otherwise find it challenging to engage with theatre.

How the Idea Came to Life

The idea for Community Playlist started with a simple question: How can we create a space where local artists can express themselves without the pressure of long-term commitments? The answer was to build a project that values community involvement and creative freedom.

Michael (Founder | Artistic Director) envisioned a series of performances held in accessible venues, where artists could experiment and audiences could enjoy fresh, dynamic shows. Paradigm Coffee and Music became the perfect home for this vision, offering an intimate setting that fosters connection between performers and viewers.

The idea itself is not entirely new. Michael previously performed in similar cabaret-style productions during his time with the Utah Shakespeare Festival, as well as in various benefit performances across the country while touring with Broadway musicals. But the idea to use ticket sales to benefit other local nonprofit organizations throughout the area, special thanks must be given to Kate and Mags of Paradigm Coffee and Music for this brilliant idea. By offering this space in-kind and taking a chance on this project from the very beginning, they helped make Community Playlist possible. They have been there every step of the way, and we truly would not be where we are today without the many humbling conversations, shared excitement, and collective vision for how this project can continue to grow.

The First Performance.... Mic check, is this thing on?

The first Community Playlist performance was a milestone. It sold out the night before the event, a clear sign that the community was ready for something different. The energy in the room was electric, with performers and audience members feeding off each other’s enthusiasm.

This initial success was not just about ticket sales. It was about creating a welcoming space where creativity could flourish. Many performers shared how the project gave them confidence and inspiration to keep creating. The community’s support was crucial, providing encouragement and motivation through pep talks and shared excitement.

Since that first show, Community Playlist has held six sold-out performances at Paradigm Coffee and Music. The project culminated in a season finale at the Weill Center, where 600 tickets were sold. These numbers reflect more than popularity; they show how deeply the project resonates with the community.

Why Community Support Matters

Community Playlist would not be where it is today without the people who showed up, took chances, and believed in the project. This support goes beyond attendance; it includes volunteers, promoters, and artists who contribute their time and energy.

The project thrives because it values collaboration and inclusivity. It welcomes anyone interested in sharing their creativity, regardless of experience or background. This openness has created a vibrant network of artists and supporters who keep the project growing.

Archiving Performances and Honoring Contributions

To maintain transparency and celebrate the journey, Community Playlist is committed to archiving previous performances and recognizing everyone involved. This archive serves as a living record of the project’s evolution and the many talents that have contributed.

  • Documenting performances with photos, videos, and written reflections

  • Listing all artists, volunteers, and supporters involved in each show

  • Sharing stories behind the performances and creative processes

This effort not only honors past contributions but also inspires future participants by showing the project’s impact and growth.

Creating a Lasting Creative Outlet

Community Playlist is more than a series of shows; it is a creative community that adapts to the needs of its members. By offering a flexible, supportive environment, it allows artists to explore new ideas and connect with audiences in meaningful ways.

The project demonstrates that theatre can be accessible and inclusive without sacrificing quality or passion. It opens doors for people who might otherwise miss out on the joy of performing and collaborating. Furthermore, Community Playlist continues to explore partnerships with other venues and nonprofit organizations in an effort to bring performances directly into the community; meeting future audience members where they are, rather than expecting them to come to us.

Looking Ahead

The future of Community Playlist is bright. The project aims to keep evolving with the community’s needs, always prioritizing creativity and connection.

For anyone interested in participating or attending, Community Playlist offers a unique opportunity to be part of a growing creative movement. Whether you are an artist looking for a flexible outlet or an audience member seeking fresh performances, this project welcomes you.

Community Playlist shows how theatre can adapt to modern lifestyles while staying true to its core purpose: bringing people together through creativity. The project’s success is a reminder that when communities come together to support the arts, they create spaces where everyone can thrive.

We're just warming up....
